Whistler Mountain had always been on our family’s travel bucket list. Known as a playground for the rich, famous, and snow sport enthusiasts, we knew we had to experience it for ourselves. Ever the adventurous spirit, I gathered up my husband Franck and our two children, ages 9 and 11, for an unforgettable journey to Whistler, Canada. The crisp mountain air, stunning views, and fresh snow made it a much-needed escape from San Diego’s temperate climate.
Discovering the Magic of Whistler's Forest
One of the highlights of our trip was exploring Whistler’s breathtaking forest. We opted for a private medicine trail snowshoe experience, guided by a local expert who shared incredible stories of the mountain's history and lore of the indigenous peoples. It wasn’t just a scenic hike through the snow; it was an educational journey. Our guide taught us about the edible and healing plants hidden beneath the blanket of white, and the ways in which nature had sustained the people who called this region home. The kids were captivated, and even Franck and I learned something new.
A Playful Escape in the Whistler Mountain Snow
While the snow wasn’t at its best that year, it didn’t stop us from having a blast as a family. Coming from the sun-kissed beaches of San Diego, it was refreshing to immerse ourselves in a snowy playground. We reveled in the freedom of the slopes, played in the snow, and took breaks to warm up at our cozy suite. Booking a suite gave us the option to enjoy breakfast and dinner at home, making it easy to relax after long, exciting days. We ventured out for lunch, soaking up the sunshine on outdoor decks and embracing the mountain atmosphere.
Tubing Down Whistler Mountain: Laughter and Lasting Memories
No trip to Whistler would be complete without a few rounds of inner tubing. We grabbed our tubes and spent hours sliding down the hills, laughing and creating memories we’ll cherish forever. There’s something about the simplicity of it—just our family, the snow, and the shared joy of an activity that brings out the child in all of us. It's one of those moments that make you pause and appreciate the magic of family time.
Exploring Blackcomb: Bundle Up and Enjoy the Outdoors
If you’re planning a visit to Whistler, be sure to spend as much time outdoors as possible—especially at Blackcomb. The natural beauty is second to none, and there's a sense of peace in being surrounded by such vast, untouched wilderness. However, the cold is no joke, so bundle up in your warmest clothes and invest in solid snow boots to keep comfortable. The mountain views are simply breathtaking and worth every ounce of effort it takes to explore them.
Friendly Faces and Luxurious Stays
What impressed me most about Whistler, beyond the stunning scenery, was the warmth of the Canadian people. Despite its reputation as a high-end destination, we found the locals to be welcoming and kind. While prices for food and lodging were on the higher end, they were still reasonable for such a world-class resort. We struck a balance by cooking most of our meals at our suite, giving us more time to relax and enjoy each other’s company in the comfort of our temporary mountain home. Of course, we also indulged in some delicious outdoor meals while soaking in the fresh, alpine air.
Whistler: A Family Destination Worth the Journey
As we packed up to return to San Diego, I reflected on how lucky we were to have experienced Whistler as a family. The adventure, the education, the laughter—it was everything we could have hoped for in a mountain getaway. Whistler lived up to its reputation, and we left with memories that will last a lifetime.
