🚀 Ever wondered what it’s like to be a NASA test pilot? I had the chance to meet James L. Less at the Miramar Air Show, and his insights into supersonic flight and NASA’s cutting-edge projects blew my mind! Find out how NASA is shaping the future of aviation and space travel—this is a must-read! #NASA #TestPilot #SupersonicFlight
The Role of NASA as a Federal Agency
Did you know NASA is just one of many administrative agencies of the U.S. government? I explained to my children that an administrative agency, like NASA, is created by legislation to carry out laws that serve the public good. Under the U.S. Constitution, the government is required to "promote general welfare," meaning it has a duty to advance the health, safety, and peace of its citizens. Having studied administrative law in law school, this was a great opportunity to tie in NASA's work to a broader understanding of federal responsibilities.
Meeting James L. Less: NASA's Coolest Pilot
At the Miramar Air Show, I had the chance to meet James "Clue" Less, who works at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. He took time to share NASA's cutting-edge work in aviation, particularly their research into supersonic flight. NASA is striving to develop aircraft that can fly faster than sound without causing the disruptive sonic booms we all associate with breaking the sound barrier. For some, that sound can be thrilling; for others, it's downright terrifying.
Jim's Projects: From Supersonic Flight to Mars Missions
Jim spoke passionately about the variety in his role. From testing pods that eventually went to Mars on the Curiosity Rover to working on improving supersonic flight efficiency, he gets to experience many different projects. NASA’s goal isn’t just speed but also efficiency and environmental sustainability in aviation. When I asked him about affordability, he laughed, saying, "That’s not my job to figure out."
Why NASA Test Pilots Have One of the Coolest Jobs in the World
Listening to Jim Less speak, it’s clear he has one of the most exciting jobs in the world. His role requires immense focus, discipline, and intelligence—all virtues I deeply admire. His ability to contribute to NASA’s mission of pushing technological boundaries is inspiring.
If I had the chance to work in any federal agency, it would be NASA or the FBI, as the idea of being part of a team that contributes to innovations that make small steps and giant leaps for mankind is incredibly appealing.
What excites you most about NASA’s work?
Supersonic flight
Space exploration
Environmental sustainability
All of the above!
