The Hidden Struggles of Owning a Fixer-Upper: Hardship, Resilience, and Growth (Part 2 of Series)

Part 2 of My Fixer-Upper Series: When the Dream Becomes a Challenge

💪 Ever wonder what it's really like to own a fixer-upper? It's not just about time and money—it’s about resilience and sacrifice! 😓 In Part 2 of my Fixer-Upper Series, I’m revealing the hidden struggles we faced while renovating our home with no budget and raising toddlers. 🏡💸 Follow along to see how we overcame the odds and stayed strong! #FixerUpperStruggles #HomeRenovationJourney #BudgetRenovation

Article Summary:

Owning a fixer-upper is often romanticized, but the reality is much tougher. In this part of my series, I reveal the hidden struggles of renovating a fixer-upper without enough money, connections, or renovation experience. From juggling financial constraints to balancing family and work, I’ll share how we faced these challenges head-on, using creativity, endurance, and community to keep going. These obstacles tested our limits but also taught us invaluable lessons.

The Reality Check: Owning a Fixer-Upper with No Money

When the pipes burst under the slab our carpet was ruined. Unexpected repairs from fixer-uppers add stress to young families.

Congratulations! You’ve bought a fixer-upper, but now you’re broke. This was our reality. We were house poor, trying to balance raising toddlers with no local family support, affording childcare, building a business, and renovating a house. The period I call "Running on Fumes" tested every part of my being—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Our 2,322 square foot house had potential with its good bones and spacious garden, but the problems were numerous: a completely worn out roof, no A/C, busted underground plumbing, and every room needed updating. The kicker? We had no money to fix it. Every cent went to childcare. At one point, we were paying $32,000 a year for daycare, just so we could work and build my coaching business.

Franck was traveling for work, often abroad in China and Hong Kong, while I juggled my roster of demanding celebrity and corporate clients and taking care of the children and doing the work on my own. Exhaustion became a constant companion, with colds and the flu knocking me down as I pushed through the endless workload.

Tackling the Renovations of A Fixer-Upper with Limited Resources

Working With What You've Got

With no extra cash to spare, we had to get creative. We focused on what we did have: water for the garden. We installed drip irrigation to deal with strict water restrictions, slowly transforming our barren soil into something that could sustain life. We couldn’t afford mature plants, so we bought tiny baby plants at $3.50 each and sometimes even less, working painfully on small landscaping tasks. There was a time when spending $200 on plants or garden tools felt like an excruciating stretch.

Building A Network of Trustworthy Tradesment

Networking saved us. Franck's colleague introduced us to a trustworthy handyman named Jeff, who connected us to reliable, affordable craftsmen. They became central to our renovation process, offering us quality work at reasonable prices. Without these connections, much of our renovation journey would have been impossible.

The truth is, you can't fix a fixer-upper up on your own. You need experts, licensed pros, and people who know the ins-and-outs of construction. More importantly, you need people you can trust. Skilled tradesmen are already hard to find in an age that prizes digital careers and Youtubers. Honest, caring, skilled tradesmen, in my heart's truest opinion, are the builders of the world and sit high on my pedestal of heros.

In the above sequence of photos, you'll see that we were forced to renovate the flimsy stair railing when our son, who was simply holding onto the top railing, fell through. Luckily, he landed on a pile of pillows. We turned to local pros for help while Franck and my brother finished the details.

Making Sacrifices and Living Below Our Means

While our peers enjoyed vacations, new cars, and luxury goods, we lived far below our means. Every month, it felt like we were in the red because we saved first and lived on the remainder. Even though we were accumulating savings, touching it felt like robbing from our future. This financial creativity and resourcefulness helped us stay afloat during the toughest years.

The Emotional Toll: When Things Go Wrong

I get furious when people reduce our renovation journey to "just time and money." They’ve never experienced the heartbreak of a leaky roof on Christmas Eve, scrambling to find someone to fix it, and realizing there’s no money left for the Christmas you want to give your kids.

The struggle is real, and it takes a toll on your marriage, family, and self-worth. Those who haven’t walked this path simply don’t understand the journey of financial self-discipline, putting your family's well-being first, and creating for yourself a home that reflects your character.

Would you take on a fixer-upper if you knew about the hidden struggles?

  • Absolutely, I love a challenge!

  • Maybe, but only with enough money saved up.

  • No way, it’s too much stress.

Your Turn!

Have you ever faced a financial or emotional struggle while renovating a home? What kept you going through the hardest moments?
