Writing a Feminist Romance Novel that Challenges Tradition
When I set out to write La Libération, I knew I wanted it to be more than just a spicy romance novel. I wanted to blend history, economics, politics, and the struggles for equality into a narrative that could ignite conversations about women’s rights, social justice, and reproductive health. By writing a feminist romance novel, I crafted a story that doesn’t just entertain but challenges how we think about love, choice, and freedom.
The Power of Choice in a Feminist Romance Novel
In La Libération, Aata’s journey begins with an arranged marriage meant to help her family’s sugar empire grow from Tahiti to Europe. This situation questions a woman’s right to choose who she marries, challenging the societal norms of the 1800s. Through Aata’s story, I wanted to show readers that a feminist romance novel can bring to light critical questions about women’s rights and autonomy.
Reproductive Health and Empowerment: A Feminist Narrative
Guided by her guardian Isabelle, Aata learns about family planning—a revolutionary concept for a young woman in the 1800s. In one memorable moment, Isabelle introduces her to condoms, empowering her with knowledge about reproductive health and safe sex. The availability of condoms in the book highlights the advancements in women’s reproductive rights and health—a theme central to a feminist romance novel.
Facing Colonialism and Globalization
The novel takes Aata on a journey through Asia, India, and Africa, revealing the impacts of colonialism. As globalization begins to take shape through technological advances like the long seafaring steam engine, Aata witnesses how the French, British, and Dutch empires have spread across the world. This exploration of colonialism weaves another layer of social awareness into this feminist romance novel, making Aata’s experience a broader look at freedom and oppression.
Slavery and Freedom: A Feminist Perspective on History
As Aata travels, she learns about the ongoing battles to end slavery, especially in Britain and the United States. She encounters writings by anti-slavery proponents like Lincoln and Emerson, which influence her view of her own life and the roles imposed on her as a woman. Her reflections on slavery add a significant historical dimension to this feminist romance novel, drawing parallels between her lack of freedom and the lives of those in bondage.
Redefining a Woman’s Role: Empowerment through Self-Discovery
Aata’s journey in La Libération is also one of self-discovery. She realizes her capacity to shape her future and claim a role beyond being a bargaining chip in her family’s empire. Her personal growth encapsulates the essence of a feminist romance novel, where love and passion are not at odds with personal empowerment and freedom.
Bridging Knowledge and Storytelling to Empower Women
As a writer, I draw from my academic background in international affairs, comparative politics, and sociology, as well as my legal training at Northwestern California University School of Law. My studies opened my eyes to the nuanced dynamics of power, freedom, and social justice that shape our world. With La Libération, I wanted to weave this knowledge into a compelling, relatable story that doesn’t just entertain but invites readers to examine complex issues like reproductive rights, economic independence, and social equality. My goal was to create a story that empowers women to reflect on these themes in an approachable, thought-provoking way.
