Article Summary: Planning to visit the San Diego Miramar Air Show with kids? This guide offers family-friendly tips for a fun, educational, and unforgettable experience, from choosing the best seating options to discovering interactive exhibits and avoiding the crowds.
Prep for the Day At The Miramar Air Show With Kids
Taking kids to the Miramar Air Show requires some smart planning. For security reasons, the Marine Corps base doesn’t allow regular bags, so pack everything into a clear backpack. Essentials like sunscreen, a water bottle, snacks, and sunglasses are a must, as the day is likely to be long and sunny. Don’t get caught with the wrong bag, or you’ll have to return it to your car—a trek you’ll want to avoid!
Free Entrance or Paid Seating? Your Choice
The Miramar Air Show is free for general entry, but for a more comfortable experience, consider paying $25 per seat for the grandstands, or upgrade to a VIP shaded section. We found the grandstands ideal; they kept us out of the tight crowds and made viewing the incredible jet demonstrations a breeze.
Beat the Crowds and the Heat
Arrive before 11 a.m. to find good parking, take in all the activities, and chat with the pilots before the crowds gather. With no tents or shade structures allowed, plan to wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and cover up to stay comfortable as temperatures rise. Be sure to pack ear protection for yourself and your kids! If you're in a pinch, cotton balls work well!
Kid-Friendly Zones for Hands-On Fun
The Miramar Air Show is packed with activities for kids! Look for the NASA tent with interactive science and engineering demos, and get ready to meet pilots, climb into military vehicles, and even tour aircraft interiors. Kids can get their faces painted, purchase memorabilia, and watch thrilling motorcycle and car stunt shows. While many activities are free, keep some cash on hand for extras like face painting.
Food and Drink Options
Expect classic carnival-style food vendors offering treats kids love but fewer healthy options. Bringing your own snacks can be a great choice, especially for younger children who need to stay fueled throughout the day.
Ask Questions and Meet Inspiring People
Encourage kids to chat with pilots, NASA scientists, and soldiers to learn more about aviation careers, military service, and scientific innovation. The Miramar Air Show isn’t just high-flying fun—it’s an educational experience that introduces children to the impact of the U.S. military and agencies like NASA on global affairs. Use this time to answer tough questions kids may have about conflict and peace, setting the stage for meaningful conversations.
